** spoiler alert ** I don't know what it was about this book that called to me at first, perhaps the pretty line illustrations on the cover, or the name of that famous compendium of Arabian fairy tales but something about the book called to me and I picked it of the library shelf. Its a small book and it is simply but very elegantly written, and yet it says so much more than many books that spend thousands of more words and pages on descriptions and actions. Very few authors can say so much with so few words, though Ray Bradbury comes to mind. Naguib Mahfouz is a brilliant genius of prose, his words stylized and simple convey so much painting vivid pictures in your mind. Meanwhile the actual substance of the work, which is a series of tales featuring some of the familiar characters from the original Arabian Nights come and go through their respective tales enduring hardships while depicting their all too human frailties and the failure of those in power as well as how power corrupts anyone. But lest this just be a condemnation of the rich and powerful, the author shows us as well how the poor can come to lust for riches and how they connive just as well as the rich or powerful to gain and keep what they desire. Innocents suffer, evil is punished, and people are corrupted or given second chances on a whim, pretty much like life in general. This is no romantic fairy tale where the heroes always win on account of their virtues or evil is always punished because it deserves it, but rather it seeks to subvert those romantic notions of fairy tales and replace them with brilliantly written stories about the harsh, randomness of life. A truly brilliant work, beautifully written. I can easily say, that based on this one book, Naguib Mahfouz is one of my new favorite authors and I eagerly seek more of his works to read and enjoy. I highly recommend this book to lovers of stylists, literature or fantasy. A truly mesmerizingly beautiful book.
4.5 Stars. Strong series, enjoyable returning characters with the focus of the books shifting not unlike Black Dagger Brotherhood, but alot less cheesy.
