I borrowed this book from my grandfather (a WWII Navy vet who was a prisoner of the Japanese) years ago. I could never bring myself to read it and it's been sitting on my shelf since then. Time to at least give it a go. 4/3/09- I am enjoying this book much more than I expected to, as much as one can "enjoy" a book about the horrors of war. It is very well-written, telling the story of individual prisoners as well as the broader story of what happened in various locations. I guess it helps that it started with Wake Island, which is where my grandfather was located and taken prisoner. I didn't know, for instance, that there were many non-military persons who were on the island building fortifications who were taken prisoner. 4/22/09- Finished it tonight. It was a very difficult book to get through, but excellent. I was interested to read about how difficult life was for POWs upon returning, and how they never were properly compensated by either the Japanese government or the US government. Many of them died rather young. My grandfather lived to the age of 92, an impressive feat on its own, even more so when considering that as the author of the book put it, being a POW in Japan essentially added 10-15 years to a man's age.

I (ryan) loved the third book in the Redwall Series, just a little bit of violence, a little funny, and one sad passage.
