I really like the way Lippmann writes. This story was a bit odd, though - the long-kept secret just didn't play true to me. Ultimately, I just didn't care all that much about what happened to the characters. Much of the book is narrated by someone unknown, who apparently is one of the five friends. Yet that narration never tells you which one, and it refers to all of the characters in the third person. I found that disconcerting.
