April 14th Burned, by Ellen Hopkins, is a story involving many issues that teens in a very strict households deal with. In the story, the main character, Pattyn Scarlet Von Stratten, is of the Mormon religion, and has to deal with the numerous restrictions included in the religions guidelines. Pattyn, having to deal with the dramas of becoming a teenager, experiences a sense of rebellion when her religion causes her to question the people of her life. Should a religious aspect affect a person’s morals? I feel this story is very compelling so far. It brings about very true points about both sides of the dilemmas. The text itself is very engaging, and can make you feel the emotions present within the characters.
