A rip roaring adventure tale written in 1885, with plenty of violence (an elephant ripping a man in two is only the beginning) and plenty of racial insensitivity (well, it’s Africa!) It was written on a bet: the author (Haggard) and his brother were discussing Treasure Island, and the brother bet that Haggard couldn’t write a novel half so good. I think he succeeded, by more than half. I couldn’t put it down.
