I think I was ten or eleven when my inner-skeptic matured and I realized that the words "based on a true story" or "based on the novel" more closely meant "has a vague relationship to...". This is definitely the case with P.D. James' The Children of Men, the source material for Alfonso Cuaron's 2006 film of the same (though article-less) title. The movie was my all time fav-film of 2006, followed by the less well-received The Prestige (by the director of Memento) and Little Miss Sunshine. Children succeeded (as a film) because of it's very realistic approach to what a future with no children would look like without Children, and to what lengths people would go to when a woman finally did again become pregnant. One thing I wished for in the book, was, because of the nature of the medium, one would have more time to become accustomed to the depressing, apocalypse-accepting world that was created by this simple yet chilling premise. To this end, the book was rather successful; split 60-40 into to "Books", the world of no children is more lengthily described, though the richness of Cuaron's filmmaking offers a very different exposure. In the end, the book isn't the same work of excellence that Cuaron's film was; the edges are too smooth and the storytelling too rough to really chill in the same way the movie did. Outside of the most basic premise and the leading character's names, the book and film share little in plot or theme. The only reason to pick up this book is if you're into post-apoc (or maybe this is some form of pre-apoc) lit, or if you really really liked the film. P.D. James, at least in this book, is not quite a master of her art, but the fact that this novel gave rise to such a good film makes it well worth it's while.
