I wanted to like this book more than I did. The history of the island was fascinating. About half way through the book I looked up pictures of the settlement Kalaupapa on the internet and it made things in the book much more real. I understand now why the lepers just couldn't walk away. The "pali" was almost insurmountable. However, I didn't really enjoy the writing style of the book. I felt like the author didn't know where he was going with the book, and just put in random facts because he had researched them and wanted to include them even though they didn't have much to do with the story line. In some chapters I felt like he was all over the place with his storytelling. I wanted him to get to the point and get on with the book. That said, though, I definitely would recommend the book because the history was so interesting.
