I really enjoyed this quirky historical novel set in WW2 Germany. Zusak does a superb job of letting the reader know what it might have been like to be an ordinary German citizen living in a close-knit neighborhood during the War. Some of his characters are patriotic Nazis, others are more politically lukewarm, and still others are persecuted by Hitler's soldiers who carry out his policies. The narrative is Death. I was prepared to dislike him, but actually felt sympathetic for him at times. I loved his almost Godlike omniscience and his near compassion for his victims. Using him as a character was an effective way to let the reader sense the ever present possibility of losing a loved one during the War. The characters are well-developed, likable, and memorable. The book has a realistic ending. I mostly loved this novel. My only criticism is the preponderance of the Lord's name in vain. There's quite a bit of swearing too, which really didn't bother me. But when they throw God in the mix, I am usually offended. The divine oaths got a bit tiresome after a while. Recommended with that lone reservation.
