Originality oozes off each page with gooey, playful mysticism in this psychedelic kaleidoscope of heroic toothpicks, gum chewing sycophants, and globular minions. "Leven Thumps" is "Harry Potter" on hallucinogenics, loaded with mind-bending images and lots of dripping goop. It is ultimately a dark comedy, whimsical fantasy, and coming of age story, bobbing somewhere between the twisted membranes of Tim Burton, Hayao Miyazaki, and Salvador Dali.

It's so hard to rate this memoir... Jaycee Dugard endured an unspeakable isolation and a level of abuse no one person should ever face. Her elementary-level retelling of these events is rather tough to read. Despite being an insightful young woman, a great deal of her book feels a bit superfluous and fluffy. That being said, I'm not sure I'd actually really want the REAL meaty details of her time in captivity. All in all, I read the book in a day, mostly because of its childlike sentence structure and story-telling. The first third of the book is horrifying...and then it becomes something else...dare I say a bit boring? Yikes... I feel like a terrible person for panning this woman's story. Read it if you are interested in her story and are willing to subject yourself to storytelling from a 5th-grade level educated 30-year old...otherwise, don't bother.
