I feel like I say this a lot, but this is another one of those books that really could have benefited from another time or two through editing. Although there aren't glaring errors, the whole thing felt a little rushed, skimming the surface of complex feelings and relationships in a way that felt generic, especially concerning Number Four's first romantic relationship (lots of generic tropes like, "We talked for hours," but never a hint toward exactly WHAT was discussed, or how he manged to talk so much without revealing that he's um, not human, and that all of his life has been structured around that fact.) This is definitely a plot-driven book that strives to be a bit more but that doesn't quite cut it. Luckily, the plot is interesting enough and mostly well-paced. I may be less generous to this book due to finding out this publishing company puts out books with the outright intention that they be picked up and made into movies, but I do think that, although this is just an average sci-fi book, it could make a really good movie. In a movie, the lack of depth given to some issues will be more acceptable, while the potential for stunning visuals can make such a lack feel negligible. And while I don't generally feel compelled to continue a series that begins with a three-star book, I am intrigued enough by the story's premise to give additional books in the series another go, especially with the hope of learning more about Six and the others. And now that my "read-before-you-see" duty is done, I can go to the movie!
