I keep a reading journal and this is what I wrote after reading this book: "Bradbury dumps you in Montag's world and keeps you disoriented for quite some time. The world he has created for his characters is meant to be disappointing and sad--and it is. His descriptions feel as though they should be meaningful, but they are so full of blunt contradictions that I grow impatient with giving them their due. There's an odd hurry-up-and-read feel to the plot, which is combined with a slow-down-and-think feel to the language. It is the PERFECT way to experience the story I think--like you are there but are missing the important things, just like Montag and the people in this future are missing the important things. It feels like this needs to be read over and over to distill what happened--to work out what went on in his mind--yet it almost feels like you shouldn't. Like it isn't the real way to experience the book. Nonetheless, I am quite impressed, though I can't really say I enjoyed it. It felt awkward and uncomfortable--as it should. I know I should read this one again, but I probably never will. There is so much in what Beatty said--so much to ponder and not the time or patience to think it through. Brilliant." So there you have it.
