Noramlly, I shy away from romantic novels. I made an exception with Aimez vous Brahms , which follows an older woman who has finally left her cheating lover. She then takes up another lover, a younger man, who defies convention by loving her. Despite the romantic overtones, it really is more a study of an aging woman who tries to change her life, but sadly fails in the end. (I'm afraid they aren't selling any more copies of this book, though. I found mine by chance at Booksale and I haven't seen another copy since.) Like most of the books I've read, this too has been made into a movie starring Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Perkins (of Psycho fame) as the young lover. I haven't found a copy of that either.

Super soldier capable of amazing feats of strength – check Plucky attractive young woman as possible love interest for above soldier – check Sleazy scientist who will endanger his fellow expeditioners but who will then meet a just and grisly fate? –check Variety of brave “red shirts” – check Sure there are tons of clichés in this book but the author makes them work partially in the use of the location his characters find themselves in, a vast underground system of caverns underneath the Antarctic. He then fills those caverns with lots of fun sci-geeky stuff like ancient ruins, massive animals not seen for thousands of years and most importantly some pretty decent action. The author understands that he has ,indeed, written a thriller and he delivers. Lots of great gripping fun. I look forward to his next book.
