I read this book once a year. My mother refuses to read it. She insists that Ignatius Reilly has an abundance of characteristics that remind her of her brother. This makes reading this particular book an exercise in confronting tragic personality flaws rather than a window into the complicated world of an obsessive and disgusting guy who is, above all, a New Orleanian. We all have a little Ignatius in us. Some of us don't like to admit it.
