I have always been interested in tales of King Arthur and his noble knights. Cornwell's version is quite different; in many ways it goes against the romanticized notions of the legend. The Lancelot and Guinevere characters are interestingly different. Arthur is portrayed as a fierce warrior and descriptions of the period warfare are richly detailed. This is not a fantasy novel.
