I just don't get this. I am not sure what the story was all about. I am a big fan of classic literatures but I just don't get what the famous Ernest Hemingway would like to impart in this short novel. I grew up in an island and I can relate to the hardship of fishing especially for the old man. However, having a big fish pulling the boat of the old man is unthinkable and again, I do not know what was that all about.

I didn't finish this book. I kept trying to push myself through it to get it done for book club, but I just couldn't make it. I've heard the second half of the book is better than the first, but I can't review books in pieces. It's all or nothing for me, and if after 176 pages the characters are still unlikeable and unsympathetic, the plot is annoying and contrived, the writing is flowery and pretentious, and the metaphors are obvious and disturbing, then I don't care how amazing the second half is supposed to be- I'm not going to continue wasting my precious reading time in hopes of redemption.
