Probably not a true five-star book, but a solid four-point-five, rounded up. I have loved Simmons (The Terror, Song of Kali) and been fairly indifferent Carrion Comfort, A Winter Haunting, Children of the Night) but here he takes genre fiction (dystopia/action adventure) and makes it a bit more intelligent, plus Simmons seems to get better with each book he writes. Nick Bottom is incredibly engaging and well-drawn and the ending was a surprise, yet not. This won't be for everyone, and I totally expect mixed reviews from people I know well, but was glad to have spent the time.
