O'Connor was primarily a writer of short stories, and it shows here: this story takes forever to get off the ground, and when it does, it's basically a series of horrible events leading to the inevitable, fateful conclusion that you figured out ten pages in. Which is no longer my idea of a good literary time. Of course, as a prose stylist she was always amazing. So there's a lot of atmosphere to soak up if you can tolerate the plot.
