Thematically this reminded me a bit of Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking, in the way that the protagonists deal with the death of a loved one, and with the thought of their own end. The execution of Rules was much clumsier though, and it was apparent that this was Pouncey's first novel. Still, there were lovely bits to it and the story itself is original and compelling.
