As I extensively study Ulysses, it's gradually becoming more fascinating. It takes several reads, a good amount of research, discussion, thought, and far more patience than the 3-second quick cut editing of television and movies to which I've become accustomed. It's fairly rewarding, though, after weeks and weeks of fingernail tips, and innocently rooted follicles having been lost as casualties, when some part or another first starts to make the slightest bit of sense. It's amazing how 800 pages and countless hours of psychobabble can leave one craving, screaming, starving for any sort of coherence whatsoever. Rational thought becomes a potent drug, and a room full of simpleton, salt of the earth, southern gambling folk becomes (momentarily) a crack house of logic. The worst of it (the first unexpecting read) is over. Anyone considering this read, I would encourage you to do so, under the condition that you read Joyce's other works 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' and the collected short stories in 'Dubliners' prior to tackling Ulysses.
