The Thorn Birds started out very strongly with interesting, vivid characters. I especially liked the opening chapters and the story is told from a child's perspective. However, about midway through or a little later the plot became dominated by the next generation and I didn't find those characters or the more abstract problems they faced as compelling. McCullough seemed to be operating under the assumption that once someone passes their mid-thirties they're no longer interesting so they more or less drop out of the story. Nor did I feel that some story lines with some of the side characters were sufficiently resolved by the end.
