** spoiler alert ** This book is a great wake up call to the harsh realities of the past and present lives of many unfortunate people. I was extremely disturbed by many parts of this book including the main "scandal" of Pecola being impregnated by her own father through rape. This book really sheds light on the vulgar life of this one little girl and the fact that many girls, during that time period and even some in our own time, go through horrible events such as prejudice, racism, and even sexual abuse from their own family. The whole book is just a very vivid description of life in poverty and despair. The concept of the little girl, Pecola, dreaming of having blue eyes is a reoccurring theme throughout the book. To her, blue eyes symbolize the innocence and purity of which was taken from her by her father and her whole family life style. In the end, when she finally crumbles into herself, she sees herself as having blue eyes because she has erased her own mind and finally rid herself of all the painful memories. The fact that a little girl was brought to that point makes me so sad but the reality of it is just shockingly depressing. Overall, this book was very good but very disturbing. Not my choice read but good none the less.
