I'm beginning to wonder if Carol Lynch Williams writes any happy stories. This book is well-written, it's just sad. The story takes place over the course of one day with flashbacks filling in important events that happened previously. The whole time I felt so bad for Lacey having to take on such monumental tasks because her mother is a train wreck. Lacey is admirable, courageous, and strong, and she learns a valuable lesson. I just wish she had other ways to learn it.
