Frost reminds me of my mom. She loves him. He always seems so lost and yet he seems to find exactly what he's looking for.

This simple yet beautiful historical fiction picture book takes the reader on a journey to early nineteenth-century New England. It is spring time. The main character, the ox-cart man, prepares to leave for Portsmouth Market. The family helps him to load his cart. Everything that the family made or produced during the previous season is packed for sale. The family needs money to buy tools and seeds for the new season. At the market, the man sells all his goods including the cart and the ox. He wisely spends the earned money to buy provisions and tools and walks back home. Year by year the cycle repeats. The author of this book, Donald Hall, uses a very straightforward story line to describe simplicity of life and the repeating cycle of life. The book also tells the story of patience and endurance of those who lived on the 19th century New England farm. The book is nicely illustrated by Barbara Cooney whose pictures complement the story. The book provides an alternative lesson of history that is well suited for grades K-3 and an opportunity to learn new vocabulary for ELL students.
