This is the book to which so many consummate bibliophiles aspire to write. No mere lover of books, Manguel is a philologist (literally, a lover of learning). The Argentinean turned French author poetically recounts libraries, readers, and collectors from history and literature; he inspired "radio reading" in me. ("Radio reading" is the practice of turning away from one book to materials that it calls to mind; in this case, Borges's Ficciones and my vellum Montaigne Essais). Keep it on your bookstand; when doldrums strike, awaken yourself by paging through a chapter such as "Library as Space," a light dalliance with architecture.
I passed up 4 really good endings before this thing finally ground to a halt.
