This book was a little trashy (never forget my snobbishness), but it had some interesting parts. The line I loved the most described a client of the courtesan. The dwarf narrator (see, told you) says that he never knew if the old man was "coming soon or going forever." Ha.

I first read this series when I was in 4th grade during the hour long trips on the rickety bus to and from school. The hour trip each way gave me a lot of time daily to immerse myself in Tolkien's world and was one of the really formative experiences of my youth. It took me months to push through all three volumes, and after completing the very last few pages I felt as though I had just summited Mt. Everest. I have read this complete trilogy over ten times since then and with each reading I find more and more to love, and more about Tolkien's writing to be amazed by. He writes not only out of love, but as one who has been to the places he writes about and met the people he describes, so the feeling that you are reading about a real place populated by real orcs and real elves is always present. A more immersive book I have yet to find. Tolkien's writings created my personal ethics and many of my most deeply held beliefs. It is not a stretch to say that my feelings about these books border on the religious. I could go on about how important these books are to me and how great I think they are, but I am not good enough with words to convey the truth so I will end this review here.
