Simultaneously unified and fragmented, this text is a skillful juxtaposition of structure and characterization. I do happen to find this the least gender-oriented of any of the Lessing novels I have read, but I can see in a way why, at the time it was published, it came to stand for the feminist movement. But it could have just as easily trumpeted any of the other major social paradigm shifts within the four notebooks, so I almost think it's a shame that it was so neatly tucked into that categorization. This book can, and most likely will, make you re-evaluate your perceptions of societal normalcy.
I liked the book up until the end, when I realized what I had been waiting for wasn't going to happen. What a rip-off! I liked the author's next book, The Likeness, a lot better.
