Gawande is great, again. General theme: how can we humans, frail creatures that we are, manage to improve our performance on tasks that we are already working incredibly hard at? Specific theme: how can doctors (and the medical system, generally) improve performance? Gawande weaves together specific vignettes with general information about medical care in the U.S. and abroad in pursuit of an answer to these questions. Of special note is that childbirth is revealed to be even more frightening and amazing than I previously knew. I mean, I knew some insane shit went down, but I had no idea how many ways there were for things to go wrong. Wow. Thanks, mom!
