I didn't actually read this book. It was read to me when I was in the 5th grade (i think). I remember the theme of learning to "put aside differences with another to accomlish something" to be a life lesson I am only NOW starting to fully implement. Great book...can't say anything about the movie though.
I really love this book. I'm not a Sherlock Holmes devotee, but I enjoy a couple of old favourites every now and again, so I'm not slavishly devoted to canon in this case. It's a very entertaining novel, which is what reading should be, so whether or not Mary Russell is more of a Mary Sue, I'm not complaining. She doesn't really get on my nerves. And the writing and atmosphere is really good, too. This book is a little episodic, but I think it works in this case. After all, don't you want a few cases to cement the relationship between MR and SH before they work on a big one?
