It's been a while since I've gone back and read The Colour of Magic, which is the very first of the twenty or so books that now make up the Discworld series. It was interesting to see just how far Pratchett has come in the 22 (!) years since this was first published. TCoM is very much a less polished book than the later ones; some of the details of the world established here contradict later canon (especially with regards to wizards and the setup of the Unseen University); Death seems wildly OOC when compared with the rest of the series; and the humour and the central themes of the book generally seem a lot less honed. I quite like Rincewind, but he's not one of my more beloved characters, so all in all I would recommend that someone who is new to the series begin not with this, but with something like Mort or Moving Pictures, since part of the genius of the series is that, for the most part, you really don't need to read the books chronologically. Then I would go back and read TCoM for background and to see where the series first began. It's not a bad book - not by any means - but for me, the attraction of rereading it once more comes more from the promise it holds than from any inherent qualities in the book itself.
