I definitely suggest reading Abercrombie's First Law series before reading this book, so you know all the references and second-tier characters that return in this book. I do feel this book has some flaws. It can get a bit annoying how witty Abercrombie writes every single character in his books, there is no normal dialogue, everybody speaks in clever, quick-witted, biting retorts and there are no heroes at all. Every single character is nihilistic, despicable, and evil. Which, in a way makes the story pointless as he creates a world devoid of hope, there is only killing and more killing. However Abercrombie makes it all just so damn fun. As redundant as his endlessly witty characters are, they make you laugh. Yes, the book fall apart in its last act, and has too much of a fairy tale ending for such a dark adventure and the character of Shenkt is utterly nothing more than a plot device, but for a high-octane revenge story its still a blast.
