I thought this book was great. I read East of Eden a few months back; The Grapes of Wrath is much better and I'm glad I gave Steinbeck another try. The Grapes of Wrath chronicles one family's struggles through the Great Depression (covering several months) but the story is not a downer. The characters are so interesting and the point of the book is not how hard and depressing their life was, but how this family and its individual members are able to cope and to survive. The descriptions about the state of the country and economy in those days were also very interesting to me. The chapters alternate writing styles, between telling the regular story of the main charaters, and descriptions of the surrounding conditions from varying points of view. Steinbeck does not wrap up the ending neatly, and leaves the fate of the characters to your imagination; I would usually rather have the author tell me exactly how the story ends but Steinbeck does not like to do that! But all in all I really enjoyed this book.
