Maybe it was because of all the hype, but I was not impressed by this book. I heard so many good things going into it, and it started out with promise, but alas, it failed me. Ishiguro's characters unfold over what could be a potentially thrilling science-fiction background story, and although he touches on some aspects of it, he fails to explore it to any satisfiable extent. Instead, the reader is left with three main characters who grow up together, part ways, and then reunite in less than ideal circumstances (don't worry, I'm not giving anything away...this is made apparent in the first chapter). The story of these three is just...well....not interesting. I kept waiting for something more to happen, for something out of the ordinary, for something that would challenge by perception of these characters, something that would make me more passionate about their stories. I kept waiting, and it never came. The entire novel was just painstakingly, well, plain. Almost every review I have read has given this book five stars and called it one of the best novels ever written. I'm guessing I'm one of the few humans that just don't like Ishiguro's style.
A warm, cozy, love-filled story.
