I just the movie this weekend. The book is def better, but I liked seeing the characters come to life on the screen. I don't see what all the fuss is about with the author writing in character as the maids. I'm not sure how else it could have been done, but then again, I'm not a writer. Kathryn Stockett does a wonderful job creating dimensional characters. I like how the book switches between voices - Aibileen, Minny and Skeeter. I think that's what makes the book appealing. I grew up in the Northeast, and not that familiar with daily life in the deep South - especially on the eve of the civil rights movement, but I remember school integration in Boston in the 70's. It was not pretty. North or South, this country is full of bigotry, and The Help shed a much needed light on the lives of some of the women who helped build generations of white families for decades. Highly recommend!
