This novel follows the lives of three individuals in a small farm town, Owl in the middle of North Dakota. Mitch Hrlicka, a high school student who plays football and basketball for Owl High School, and hates his football coach and english teacher. Julia, a recent college grad and alcoholic/stoner, teaches at Owl and recently moved there from Minnesota, who hates what her life has become. Lastly, Horace, an old man who has lived in Owl his entire life, and drinks coffee with the other men his age every day at 3:00 pm, yet hates how society today has changed so much from when he was a student/ young adult. They are all connected in their thought process, in that they think similarly even though their situations are entirely different.
