A fantastic eye opening read at what the state of what passes for a liberal education has become. Granted, Bloom is an aging academic, very cranky in the twiight of his life and career, but the standards he sets for himself, his students and his reader are sterling. Bloom seems to pine for the Classic Age when slavery was not balked at as long as the temples were still being built and for a Modern Age when segregation was a non-issue. But the Bloom is the champion of what it takes to think critically, the rigor of the academic mind, the belief the future lies fallow when we forget knowing how we got here.

Ellroy writes fast. Great characters and plot development. When Boyd and Bondurant link up in Florida it's a frenzy. The pace dies down a bit towards the end but overall very strong.
