An adult book about children who are left to fend for themselves when their parents are taken away in 1920s Russia. How Alex survives, how the wild side creeps in when the survival instinct kicks in, all these are narrated in this short novel with beauty. I think it beats William Golding's Lord of the Flies for saying the same thing with simplicity, though perhaps not with so much finesse.
