Yes, David Foster Wallace was clearly giggling, "I'm soooo witty!" the whole time he was writing this. But I don't care. Jesus, it's really good. Though I'm still not sure I get what happened in the end. Anticonfluentialism forever.
the tone of this book was beautiful. melancholy, but powerful and touching without slipping into sentimentality. I picked it up because I love greek mythology, but I'm glad that it was about something bigger than the myths it touched on. any time I explain to people that this book's main premise is that the minotaur has survived thousands of years after the labyrinth and is working as a short order cook in the south, they laugh. it is a funny concept, but deceptive. this is probably my favorite book that I've read in several years.
Fast-paced, funny (you have to like dry cop humor) mystery-thriller which doesn't take itself too seriously and for that very reason is truly entertaining. I like both detectives and Mike's family. Definitely, a promising start of the series.
