I read this book in two sittings. I loved it! All about a woman and Mother in Germany during world war two who worked at the city zoo. She has two children a young boy and a teenage daughter. Her husband is away and fighting in the war. She loves her children and all the animals at the zoo espcially an elephant called "Marlene" (named after Marlene Dietrich) I won't tell you the whole story, but an elephant of four yeaars old is saved by this woman and brought home to their garden. When the bombing of the war hits there city they go on the road with the elephant fleeing the city....there journey is very gripping. The story all told from an old woman in a nursing home who is the daughter. It is well worth the read.

With Leon's later books it really is more about Venice than it is about the mystery. And that is fine with me. I spent a summer in Venice and I follow Brunetti down every street in my mind.
