Not sure how much more I would like this if I'd gotten to it before seeing the movie, as such, the surprise is kind of ruined, but I didn't think the surprise was handled all that well, really. As a debut novel, very good. Chuck gets a point for making my dad laugh with the "does it mean anything" mortician joke, and there are good bits--particularly the piece about hunting deer after the fall of society (this is in chapter 16, p. 124 in the trade paperback of mine). I admit I hear Edward Norton narrating, though. "You wake up at Sky Harbor..." It isn't a problem, just an observation, like when I hear yoda and R2-D2 when I read the Zahn Heir to the Empire trilogy. Chuck also gets a nod for one typo "more quiet" for "quieter" but that's something he can really blame his narrator for since the book's first person. Chuck also gets a nod for using concrete every time he's talking about people smacking skulls into concrete and not confusing it with cement, like every dang MFA and Ph.D. candidate writer I've read this year. Confusing cement and concrete is like confusing flour and bread, okay? One is an ingredient in the other. They are decidedly not same thing. I am Brian's now-vented spleen.
