Out of all of Camus' work, including The Myth of Sisyphus and The Stranger, this one remains the most powerfully thought-provoking in my opinion. Camus was not a particularly optimistic man, but in this book he reconciles optimism with absurdism, telling the story of a town gripped by a plague outbreak. Through the telling of the story of Dr. Rieux, the local physician who knows that his skill and means are not enough to stop the plague, Camus describes the solemn duty to one's own ideals that one must commit to in the face of uncontrollable and indefatigable adversity, or the absurd.
