too much to mention! A must-read for women interested in spiritual growth.
So enjoyed this book! Beautifully written; sentences that force you to stop reading to admire their beauty and precision. And the writing is funny, too. It definitely feels a bit old fashioned and the plot moves slowly. I didn't get Antonia's passion; I understood it in a passive way, but it didn't grab me. Don't know if that is because of the age of the book. Despite that lack (failure on Cather's part or on my mine, I'm not sure which) I really enjoyed and cared about the characters. And although not much happens plot wise, I was continually surprised by what did happen and the twists and turns in character development. One of the great beauties of this book is how in tune the characters and the author are with the natural world. I feel so divorced from it in my life and reading about the changing seasons and how close Cather's characters are to the prairie and its world made me feel a bit sad, acknowledging what our modern society has lost through this disconnection. And although the winters sound cold and long and brutal and the summers hot and long and brutal, I found that for the first time in my life I really wanted to live in the midwest and see what life would be like there.
This novel stretched my mind to the breaking point as an undergraduate. Love it, love it, love it.
