As I read this I had the feeling that I'd read A Wrinkle In Time before. I read it again just to be sure. It's an okay book. I can see how kids would really like it. It reminds me of The Phantom Tollbooth for some reason. It's an important book to know, I suppose.

War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. I think I'm going to have that chant in my head for quite some time. Wow! What a book! This classic novel can serve as the poster child for the dystopia to top all dystopias. I'm probably in the small minority that never read this classic in High School or College, but I can see why some High Schools would sway away from requiring this novel, as some of Winston Smith's actions and thoughts could be quite disturbing especially when it came to his initial feelings about Julia. There are many scenes that I found myself cringing and putting the book down and walking away for a bit, and I think that's why it took me longer to read this story. The talking portrait toward the end and the torture scene were too disturbing for words. The sooner I can get that out of my head the better. Ugh! Overall, this book paints a daunting picture of society gone wrong in more ways than one. It draws an account where Big Brother controls absolutely all aspects of society. There is no existence of privacy, preservation of history, or freedom of thought, words or feelings. It's an account that tips the balance to the extreme of haunting possibilities. Considering this book was written back in 1949, it's scary how plausible/possible Orwell's ideas truly were.
