I'm pretty sure I read this in fifth grade. I remember not liking it all the much. It is about a boy who is shipwrecked with an old black man on an island. Looking back on it now, my guess is that I didn't like it because I was not interested in boys shipwrecked on islands. Thinking about it now, fifth grade was the first time I had a male teacher and all the books we read (Where the Red Fern Grows, Old Yeller, and The Cay), were all books about boys and boyish things. Hmm, maybe he was going on that idea that girls will read anything. I was still a slow reader at this time, so interest was important to me.
