What's interesting is how Gaitskill uses flashbacks here, which, for the most part, aren't immediately relevant to the present storyline and consequently seem flat. But I suppose the story is interesting--a girl who becomes a model, a drug addict, basically a whore, and the aftermath of that seedy life. Sort of made me queasy while reading it, but not the best novel I've read and certainly not worthy of the National Book Award it received.
