A scholarly, well-researched book on a subject covered by few books in English: the flight of the French from the invading German army in 1940. Especially poignant are the interviews with those with firsthand experience of life in Paris in May and June of 1940. The author's main focus is on Paris and the panic that propelled Parisians to flee their homes. Notes and a bibliography for further reading provide resources for anyone wishing to explore the subject in depth.

This was a fun little book. I, too, am a candy freak, so I couldn't resist. It was fun reading about all the chocolate bars I remember from my childhood, including the uniquely Southern, yummy-delicious, Goo Goo Cluster, and the Marathon bar, which was another favorite. (After I mentioned the bit about the Marathon bar to him, my husband spent about an hour reminiscing about this candy bar in rapturous terms usually reserved for swimsuit models and big-budget comic book movies). After finishing the book, I made a field trip of sorts to my local Cracker Barrel, where you can buy many of the regional candy bars mentioned in the book, including the Moon Pie, the Abba Zabba, and the Valomilk. They were all great, but none beats the Goo Goo Cluster!
