This was the first Cornwell book I read. Now I think I have all but one or two of the Kay Scarpetta stories. But as much as I love forensics thrillers (does anyone else "love" forensics...?), Cornwell's style leaves so much to be desired that it really does make the reading suffer. For starters, the first-person narrative... Oh. My. God. Could she identify more with her heroine?! That's one major flaw that was brilliantly corrected with her other fiction series, I found.
I can't say I loved this book, but I read it in a malarial fog during my time in Mali and it offered a strange sort of comfort, mostly because she articulated a lot of the delusional nightmares I was having every night in my feverish sleep. And reading about certain details particular to the region while in the region (oh, she's writing about THOSE white metal pots everyone puts things in!) was fun in a where's waldo kind of way.
