I'm a tough one to please when it comes to the "wow-look-at-how-wacky-and-screwed-up-my-family-is" autobiographical genre. Recent history has taught us that in books like these, poetic license runs rampant. Where this book falls on the truth vs. good story spectrum I really couldn't say, but at least in this case I don't really care. The writing is crisp and the story is emotionally complex. Goes to show that if this story actually is true, that you can't really pigeonhole what effect parenting will have on children - because if any set of kids should be monumentally screwed up, these Walls kids are the ones.

Author is a newspaper writer and it reads in that manner. Very interesting historical background. Characters are not as strong.
