I expected more from Room then Donoghue delivered. The premise of the story, while intriguing in it's own right, made me believe it was going to be more of a psychological portrait of a woman and a boy who have undergone severe trauma. If that's what Donoghue was going for, I'm not sure I'm buying it, it was way too neat and tidy. The Fritzl case, the real life atrocity that the book is based on, is much darker then Donoghue's scenario, which let's the author of the hook a little bit. The device of talking through the 5-year-old, while lightening the story and adding some humor, got old pretty quickly. All that being said, I think the book would (and does) appeal to a of people. It's not challenging in any way, very black and white: "this is good and this is bad", and wraps up neatly and nicely with an ending as happy as it could hope to be.
