Most people thinks this book is just for children, but it is not. When I read it I was 25 years old and enjoyed every bit of it, you can't help smiling while you turn page after page.
This is a beautiful work of literature. It is like an anthropology and theology lesson. I was so surprised how Jones is about to write down certain attitudes of a culture that I recognized (I would never own up to it ;) ) but couldn't describe without getting angry. He is able to talk about several aspect of different cultures as gracefully as they can be represented. I am specific to mean, ASPECTS of the culture--because Jones is also very good at recognizing that a culture is way too deep and involved to really "understand" and "catch". He makes it a backdrop to a backdrop in this novel as the entire exercise in the end seems to rest on human attributes, apart from culture. Something having to do with being an at-base Moral human being- frailties included--what pathways lead someone there etc. I loved this book. and it is one of the few books I'll admit that I'll read again before long (that says terrible things about me as a reader, but there you have it). As a word of warning- there is an intense chapter near the end of this book that would probably not be suited for younger readers BUT the entire read is full of fables, myths, native knowledge, beliefs, and just beauty. It's a really special book.
