Trying too hard to be clever. I returned it to the library unfinished (thank god for libraries! I am so glad I did not spend $30 on this book). I enjoy the Van Meer asides (in that unabashedly pretentious way), but find all the supposedly mysterious and cool characters boring, the narrative voice uncompelling, and... well, yeah, basically I don't like it very much. And I am usually a sucker for anything clever and well-reviewed in the NYT.
